Mary Margaret Haugen 10th LD
Originally drawn into public service to help improve our public schools, Mary Margaret will always be an advocate for our children. She will continue to fight to fully fund and provide college and vocational opportunities so we can continue to build a brighter future.
Born on an Island County farm, Mary Margaret learned the value of hard work, common sense, and community at a young age.
Her career in public service began in 1972, when she was a young mother with four children in the Stanwood public schools. Inspired to improve reading programs in the district, she ran and won election to the school board.
Mary Margaret started a small business out of her home and ran it for 20 years while she raised her family. With her experience as a school board member and small business owner, she was elected to the State House in 1982 and established herself as a tough, honest, hardworking legislator who always puts her district first. She has served in the State Senate since 1992 and currently chairs the Senate Transportation committee.
As State Senator, Mary Margaret has proven to be both a consensus builder and someone who delivers for those she represents. From the time she first arrived at the Capitol, she has prided herself on her open door policy and plans to continue to bring a collaborative approach as we tackle the many issues facing our state. From supporting our local schools and small businesses to tackling the larger issues of transportation funding and budget reform, Mary Margaret will continue to fight for the interests of the district.
A lifetime resident of Camano Island, Mary Margaret is active in our community as a member of a number of community groups including the Camano Island Chamber of Commerce, League of Women Voters, and South Camano Grange.
