Joel Hussey 45th LD
"High school dropout rates exceed 20%, many high school graduates don’t meet minimum college entrance requirements, class size reduction initiatives passed by Washington voters remain unfunded and the Supreme Court has ruled that we’re not adequately funding education. The Legislature has clearly lost its focus on the kids and their future, instead favoring the status quo and the adults in the education system."
"Increased education funding can only be effective if accompanied by changes to the system. We must improve student outcomes and achievement, not lower graduation standards to give the appearance of better student performance."
Joel is not a professional politician. Over the past 20 years, his business activities have focused primarily on the aviation sector: leasing, financing and trading commercial aircraft. Since 2007, his company Tailwind Capital has managed and marketed aircraft for institutions and airlines around the world.
He is a Washington native who grew up in Everett. His mother was a nurse and his father spent his career in the Mukilteo School District as a teacher, librarian and principal.
Joel graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a degree in accounting and later earned an MBA from the University of Washington.
He's been married to his wife, Christi, for 27 years (they met at SPU) and have lived in Redmond for 17 years with their four kids.
Joel served on the Bellevue Christian School board for six years and recently completed three years service as Board President.
He is actively involved with the Boy Scouts, helping raise funds for the Friends of Scouting campaign. He also served on the board and as President of the Lake Washington Youth Soccer Association (LWYSA) and in 2004 led a group of committed volunteers and staff through a challenging reorganization of the Association and its finances. During his term as LWYSA President, they began discussions with King County that ultimately led to a public-private partnership to develop additional soccer fields on 60 Acres South and the return of Mueller Farm to organic farming.
Joel is passionate about education and youth sports, and has coached numerous sports and Math Olympiad teams.
