Stand UP Tacoma

Stand University for Parents—or “Stand UP” as we like to call it—is a unique, 6-week parent leadership and engagement program designed to help you lead your child to success from elementary school all the way to college.

Learn what you as a parent can do to prepare your child for college. Build a partnership with teachers, principals and each other in order to make a real and lasting change in your school. Graduate and lead your child by example.

Everyone is welcome—you don’t have to be a parent and you can have kids attending other schools. Childcare and food at all sessions are free. Fall class schedule are listed below.

About Stand UP

Stand UP is a research-based, 8-week University for Parents, particularly parents of elementary or middle school kids who live in lower-income neighborhoods. Using research, data and best practices for effective family engagement, the goal of Stand UP is to involve parents in their children's learning and improve student achievement.

Classes are once each week, and are focused on action steps parents can take immediately to get involved in their children’s academic success and ensure their children are on track to college. Throughout the course, Stand UP promotes a strong, positive partnership between the school and family

We use interactive trainings to discuss and practice topics such as: setting high expectations for your students, establishing positive and constructive relationships with teachers, and understanding school data and your student's academic profile.

Watch Stand UP parents in our sister states talk about what the program means to them.

  1. Support Parents: Increase parents’ confidence and knowledge about how to help their children succeed in school and give them specific tools to use on a day-to-day basis.
  2. Empower Advocates: Increase ongoing family involvement in local schools and in district-wide and statewide education advocacy by empowering parents to be leaders for positive change.
  3. Help Students Succeed: Improve student achievement with more informed and more involved parents who have stronger knowledge of the specific tools and tactics that support student learning.

Tacoma Parent Educators

Because Parent Educators are parents just like you, they bring an authentic voice to the discussion around parental role-definition, parent-school relationships, understanding and acting on student data and grades, and specific strategies to help students learn at home.  Using a train-the-trainer model, our Family Engagement Manager empowers local parents to share the message of Stand UP, expanding the reach of the program and bringing high-quality, research-based support to more and more families.
