2015 Legislative Priorities

Our motto this legislative session is one you've heard before: If not now, when? But with education taking center stage this legislative session, Washington has a unique opportunity to make real and lasting changes to ensure our students succeed.

Ensure education funding in Washington State supports effective policiesthat favor student outcomes, equity and transparency.

  • Ensure that investments support education system improvements which produce positive academic outcomesfor students, such as early learning and full-day kindergarten.
  • Advocate for school funding to be allocated based on local need to close achievement and opportunity gaps,especially for our most high-need, high-poverty schools.
  • Empower parents, community members, educators, and lawmakers to understand local school spending andidentify if investments are producing outcomes for students.
  • Fund an aligned system that provides access to high-quality pre-K, K-12 and affordable higher education.

Growth & Excellence 

Ensure education funding in Washington State supports effective policiesthat favor student outcomes, equity and transparency.

  • Restore Washington State’s waiver from No Child Left Behind and regain local control over nearly $40 millionfor low-income students by including student scores on state tests as one measure of many in teacherperformance evaluations.

Early Learning 

Increase access to high-quality early learning programs for children inWashington State, particularly for those in low-income areas.

  • Pass the Early Start Act to sustain and grow Early Achievers, a high-quality early childhood system that makesit easy for parents to make informed decision’s about their child’s early education.

  • Expand Washington’s high-quality pre-K program for at-risk three- and four-year olds, the Early ChildhoodEducation and Assistance Program (ECEAP).


Support policies that close the achievement gap and increase students’college and career readiness.

  • Support the implementation of Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, SmarterBalanced exams and Academic Acceleration.

  • Maintain and strengthen Washington’s Charter School Act to provide families with more high-quality publicschool options, which can meet the needs of their children.
