School: Hector P. Garcia Middle School
As an 8th grade teacher, I have worked hard to build confidence and awareness in students with learning disabilities. First, helping those students to look pass their disabilities and allowing them to see that they are beyond capable. Secondly, I have taught my students to set a standard for themselves (don't just except mediocre grades). Every year I get a significant amount of students who have never passed a state assessment or received grades higher than a C, and they have accepted this pattern as normal. For me that's unacceptable... Though tough love, motivation, and determination, our students have excelled and gained confidence knowing they can attend magnet schools, graduate from any high school, and attend college or a trade school if they work hard.
