The Common Core State Standards are expectations — they are voluntary, streamlined standards for math and English language arts based on the best practices from states around the country. The standards set goals for the knowledge, understanding, and skills students should achieve in each grade.

The Common Core State Standards are guidelines. Local teachers will still decide what to teach, how a student should learn, and local issues like what textbooks should be used.
