BESE District 5
Gary Jones - Republican
As the current Superintendent of Rapides Parish School District, Gary Jones worked with parents and educators to make positive changes for students. In his time as Superintendent, Jones turned a district budget deficit into a surplus, worked with parents and students to increase graduation rates, and sought creative ways to give students and parents more options in schools and more diverse areas of study.
Jones believes that educational decisions should be taken out of the hands of politicians so those closest to the students - local principals, teachers, and administrators – have the ability to make decisions that are in the students’ best interest. Additionally, he supports increasing teacher pay for those educators who are doing a great job helping kids learn.
As a retired Brigadier General of the National Guard, and an educator and administrator of 44 years, Jones has been a dedicated public servant to the State of Louisiana. He was named Louisiana of the Year by Louisiana Life for his work in improving education in Rapides Parish.
