BESE District 1

Jim Garvey – Republican

Jim Garvey has consistently been a leader on those key issues that are getting results for kids in Louisiana. He has voted to expand local control of education and giving those closest to the students – parents, teachers, and principals – the ability to make decisions that they know are in their best interest. Garvey supports expanding quality teacher programs and making sure that great educators get the pay they deserve. Garvey has been a staunch advocate of the JumpStart program which puts students on a clear path to career opportunities, allowing Louisiana students to leave high school prepared and ready for great jobs in their communities.

Jim Garvey has served as the District 1 representative on the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education since 2007, and was elected as Vice-President of the Board during his tenure there. Jim Garvey is a father of four and currently works at Hailey, McNamara, Hall, Larmann & Papale, L.L.P.

As a current member of the board, Garvey has stated that one of the achievements he is most proud of is the tremendous academic growth students in Louisiana have achieved since 2008, with more students achieving ‘basic’ or ‘mastery’ on state tests, as well as scoring higher on the ACT and rising graduation rates for students across the state. He is a true education champion.
