Christian Mitchell - House District 26

Why We Endorse Christian Mitchell: “Rep. Mitchell has dedicated his career to fighting to put students above politics. He’s lead the fight to provide pension equity for Chicago Public Schools, a fair school funding system statewide, and great school options for every student in every neighborhood.”

Bio: Christian Mitchell is the State Representative for the 26th district. Christian was raised by his mother, who has been a nurse for 30 years, and his grandfather, who was a union steelworker and an elder at his church in Maywood. Their hard work and commitment to community inspired him to enter public service.

Christian began his career as a faith-based community organizer with Southsiders Organized for Unity and Liberation. He worked with single mothers like his own to fight for education funding reform, affordable housing, and to create good jobs in low-income communities. In 2009, Christian drafted the legislation that would become the Urban Weatherization Initiative. This $425 million program puts people to work weatherproofing and insulating houses in their own neighborhoods to create local jobs.

Christian then went on to become a trusted advisor to other reform-minded leaders in Illinois. He worked with Lisa Madigan, 4th Ward Alderman Will Burns, and Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle. While working at Cook County, he played an important role in reducing the county sales tax, bringing relief to working families. Christian worked for Obama for America 2012 as the Paid Media and Polling Regional Director for the Midwest.

As a legislator, Christian has made it a priority to improve our schools, make our streets safer, and bring jobs to the 26th district. He has been a leader in fighting for education funding reform to make sure all children get their fair share of resources. He passed a law requiring universal background checks for private handgun sales to prevent criminals from buying guns illegally. He also helped to create a program that provides low-interest loans to local small businesses to help them create more jobs. Christian played an important role in the recent passage of bills surrounding police body cameras, independent investigations of officer-involved deaths and decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana and has relentless defended critical programs for our seniors, the disabled, and struggling working families.

Christian serves on several important committees in the Illinois House, including State Government Administration, Revenue and Finance, and Elementary & Secondary Education: School Curriculum and Policies. He is the current Vice-Chairperson of the Juvenile Justice & System Involved Youth Committee.

Christian graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in Public Policy Studies. He currently resides on Chicago’s South Side.
